There are a lot of free SEO tools available. One of our favorites is Keyword Discovery, a Free Search Term Suggestion Tool.
You can view this great tool by going to http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html
Another variant of this is offered by Overture (now known as Yahoo Sponsored Search. They offer a great keyword tool but you need to sign up in order to use it.
Another important "tool" is Google's toolbar, which offers key bits of information such as Google Page Rank. You can download the tool by visiting Google's Toolbar page.

How do I make sure my page is optimized for Google?
A better question is: Why wouldn't I want my page to be optimized for Google?!
Let's be honest. It's hard to get great position on Google. The more competition for placement the harder it is. If you want to rank well for something that nobody searches for, it's pretty easy. If you want to rank well for Hannah Montana Concert Tickets you'd better do everything right. Ignoring simple steps, like meta tags or keyword density will almost guarantee you won't be found at the top of the search results.
There are several important steps you need to follow to make sure your site is Google (and Yahoo) friendly.

A lot of people have asked: "Should I use javascript or flash on my site"?
Here's the issue - when Google or any other search engine visits your site they follow the links they find, usually links on your home page. If you have a site map, even better (we'll discuss site maps in tomorrows column).
If you have links in a javascript or flash ad rotator or menu system be aware that Google will not be able to follow those links, so if you are not linking to those pages from somewhere else on your home page (or site map) Google will NOT be able to find those pages, and those pages will NOT show up in the search results. That's a bad thing.

My site appears on page 1 of Google, though not at the top of the page. My site shows up on the bottom of page 1, in position 9. Is this good? The answer is maybe. It depends on who is above you. If your competitors are in position 1 through 8, then the answer is a resounding NO. If you are on page 2, then even worse. If you sell products on your site and the links above yours are going to non-transaction sites then you might be ok. Bottom line is that you need to be at the top of the page in order to get the traffic you need to be successful (from an SEO point of view). |
